Another beautiful sunset at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in the Florida Panhandle. I never tire of this delightful place. I especially love it when the tide is out, and you can see all the little dimples in the mud and smell the wonderful marshy smells. I have had others tell me they do not like the smell, but I love it. It’s a mixture of the mud, the salt, the grasses, decomposition, and new growth, and its life affirming. It’s like the odors I grew up with in Alabama, what I call cow-paddy perfume. I do not get to smell that as much as I once did, but when I do, it brings back precious memories of childhood and an amazing time of life.
For me, nature photography started simply as a way to record my adventures and trips so I could revisit them for years to come. What began as an afterthought gradually evolved into a consuming passion. I am very fortunate in that my dad was an avid outdoorsman, and he passed his love for the outdoors along to my brothers and me. I can vividly remember quail hunting with my dad when I was young, trudging along trying to keep up through thick cover on a freezing morning, and I still have great memories of bream fishing with my grandparents and enjoying with them that special time in late afternoon when everything grew still and quiet right before the crickets and frogs erupted into their beautiful night song. Those days are gone forever...
