I love this shot because it perfectly illustrates the dinosaur lineage of the American Alligator. The alligator is a true marvel. Being cold blooded, it must regulate its body temperature and it does so masterfully. The little horny plates on its back and tail are called scutes or osteoderms and they contain a bony plate that serves two functions. One, it protects the alligator by making the skin vary hard to penetrate and, two, they aid in heat regulation. Alligators can warm their body twice as fast as they cool down by regulating their blood flow. This ability to retain heat aids greatly on cooler days. Alligators are strictly instinctual; their brain is very small, and they have no reasoning ability. For me, nature photography started simply as a way to record my adventures and trips so I could revisit them for years to come. What began as an afterthought gradually evolved into a consuming passion. I am very fortunate in that my dad was an avid outdoorsman, and he passed his love for the outdoors along to my brothers and me. I can vividly remember quail hunting with my dad when I was young, trudging along trying to keep up through thick cover on a freezing morning, and I still have great memories of bream fishing with my grandparents and enjoying with them that special time in late afternoon when everything grew still and quiet right before the crickets and frogs erupted into their beautiful night song. Those days are gone forever...

You are one brave photographer or you had a lot of lens between you and those teeth...
Bill Chambers replied:
Not brave, Jim, I just understand gators. Shot with a 200mm. It's a small gator, 5'-6', not a danger.
