Description
A sad image of a future problem. This small gator is a beautiful specimen but it faces a very uncertain future. Even at this young age, this little gator has already become habituated to humans. When I walked down to the water’s edge, it was about 50-60 feet away from me, but as I waited for sunset it slowly began to come closer, indicating that someone has probably been giving it handouts which, in Florida, is illegal. It finally ended up about 8-10 feet away. At its current size that presented no danger at all, but it will continue to grow and may become more insistent over time. Feeding them may seem cute when a gator is small but it won’t be so cute after that gator grows larger and becomes a nuisance gator and has to be removed and killed. Please do not feed ANY wild animal. You are not doing it any favors. Allow them to remain wild and unharmed.
